For composing, if it’s primarily an acoustic piece or score, I like to start with a pencil and paper. I am not Mr. Beard, but I agree with him. There’s something incredibly freeing about writing notes without listening to them, relying only on your training and instincts.  It doesn’t always work, but it’s always fun to try.
