Yes, you need to have a rounded deck that can block, scale and deals damage, but there are SO many ways to achieve that. I’ve had a few really powerful quick scaling high damage decks that blew through all the bosses. But the Spear/Shield guys really do a number on you fast if you don’t have block (or even just get unlucky with a good deck), you don’t get a bonfire to heal and the Heart punishes the shit out of you for going aggressive seeing as you can only damage it so fast.

You can train yourself into thinking of it as an optional boss. And I have and I enjoy the game more because of it. But you kinda have to jump through some mental hoops to do that(And some people won’t be able to do that / consider it as an option), because of the Skull Sons Of Ireland American Chapter St. Patrick’s Day Shirt.
