In English we say “the chair”, but many languages have 2 genders for “the” to agree with the noun’s gender.

But, what seems so odd to me is that some languages (like French) put the definite article “the” in front of country names in the first place. It sounds so odd to an English speaker to think of saying “The China” or “The France” or “Canada”.
