In India, the election takes place over several days in different regions. Employers must give a paid leave on the day of the local day for voting. Though a lot of people, who are temporarily living in other states can’t do that. And India doesn’t have any absentee voter policy. Still, compulsory leaves are given to all citizens. Maybe the US could do the same.

It would be a big step in getting the populace to vote. But I’m pretty sure a lot of people working hourly/retail jobs would still have to go to work despite it being a holiday. I can’t foresee the government shutting down all businesses for that day. I think some even offer it as paid time off similar to when you do jury duty. TBH I think its better voting should be more than 1 day for the in-person voting.
