The great thing about that Joker is you couldn’t always tell what his true motivations were. I’m sure we could break it down and get to them but as a character he does things like changing the backstory on his facial scars. I recall this whole thing I wrote that maybe I should re-read cause I felt like I had a lot there. It had to do with how Joker makes it look like he’s this “agent of chaos” but he’s not really, it’s just part of his act. I love Joker Poker All Jokers Quarantined Shirt. I think the Killing Joke gave us a great story but I also like leaving the joker as just a wild card where you have no idea what could have possibly happened to make this guy become such an amazing criminal mastermind. He could have been blown up in a truck, but what if he was the one who blew up the truck full of soldiers, and no one cared? It is all for misdirection. He wants us to speculate on what doesn’t matter while he’s working his magic elsewhere.

The Joker is an unreliable narrator. You can’t believe what he says exactly. He actually has a very simple motivation, he doesn’t want anyone else to be in power but himself. He starts out as a bank robber, then mob hustler, and then a criminal mastermind/ terrorist. His suit and makeup get progressively “better” throughout the film to reflect his ascent, descent. Another commenter mentions the line, “I’m like a dog chasing a car, I wouldn’t know what to do if I caught it” which works with all that. Joker enjoys causing the chaos, and if Batman ever went away, Joker wouldn’t know what to do. There’d be no car to chase. They’re opposites on the spectrum with the same goal. Damn, even the bank heist… it’s a mob bank. They weren’t taking the citizen’s money, they were taking the mob’s money.
